ELGA: e-Medication

All medicines at a glance: this is ensured by e-mediation (eMedication), the electronic health record process (ELGA), available throughout Austria in pharmacies, health insurance offices and hospitals of the community. Medicines prescribed by doctors and dispensed in pharmacies are available at ELGA in the form of a so-called “medicine list” for 18 months. All ELGA participants can view their electronic medicine list through the portal of ELGA. In your electronic medicine list on the ELGA portal you can see the medicines you have ordered and have already taken from the pharmacy, as well as prescriptions that have already been opened. Entries older than 18 months are automatically removed from the e-medical list. Note: The Health Telematics Act uses the term “eMedication”.


What is the benefit of e-mediation?

With the list of electronic medicines, ELGA health service providers (ELGA-GDA), ie eg a family doctor or hospital, if they use ELGA, an up-to-date summary of the medicines prescribed and given to the ELGA section of the pharmacy. This makes it easier to check for unwanted interactions. In this way, two unnecessary commands can be avoided. In order to give good advice when buying more over-the-counter medicines, pharmacists can also find a list of e-mediation.

Registered doctors are obliged to store prescribed medicines in e-medical. Doctors who treat you can look at your medication list and thus have more of a basis for making decisions about diagnosis and treatment.

By scanning the code of the prescription, the pharmacy can read the prescription and save the distribution of the medicine prescribed in the ELGA of the affected person. By inserting an electronic card, the pharmacy can also buy non-prescription drugs (so-called “OTC-Products” [„Over the counter“]) related to interactions and access to the entire e-medical list for interaction analysis or advice.


Who can access the electronic medicine list?

Only ELGA-GDAs where the patient is currently receiving treatment can access the e-mediation list or care of. Prescription-only pharmacies have access to the medicines listed on the prescription.


Get your electronic medicine list

Residents can also access their electronic medicine list through the ELGA portal or at the ELGA ombudsman’s office and print it. The electronic medication list lists all collected and open prescriptions including the names of the medications.

What is the difference between e-mediation and e-prescription?

E-Medication is ELGA’s electronic health record application that can be used to prevent unwanted interactions and multiple prescriptions. Medical information is transmitted through e-medical. Written by ELGA or You can unsubscribe from e-medical.

An important part of the system data required for billing and social security is eg Insurance status, prescription fee waiver etc.it is not available through e-mediation and therefore first had to be submitted by the insured. This missing information is available automatically with a prescription. With e-prescriptions, the current paper prescription will be replaced. Therefore, you cannot withdraw from the prescription.
